Kissing Balls in Australian Quilters Companion & Thread Talk from My Sewing Machine #71

Hello Friends, Happy Monday and Happy Week for you! I am still in my whirlwind of merry-go-round.  I shipped off a couple of quilt last week, and have a few more to ship out before Thanksgiving.  I cannot believe Thanksgiving is next week!!!  It seemed ages ago when I finalized our Thanksgiving plans.  Anyhow, I am happy to share with you about one of my Christmas quilt being finally official!!!  You might remember this…

festive fun

Well, Kissing Ball is currently being featured in the latest issue of Australian Quilters Companion magazine(#82).  It is a nod to my Aussie Quilting Friends, as well as “the” Aussie quilting friend of mine Lynette Anderson — who happens to be the designers of the fabrics I used for this quilt.  The fabrics are from Lynette’s Festive Fun fabrics for RJR Fabrics.

festive-fun_aqc

You can’t really see it, but I quilted an allover holly sprig motifs on the quilt.  I am hoping you can see close up shot I took of a sprig here.

img_5100

I am sharing with you the schematic of the holly sprig motif for the Thread Talk portion of the post today.   Perhaps you could use the motif on a Christmas project.  You still have time, you know? :)

Step 1. First, I free-motion quilted the center berries.  It was perfectly fine for me overlap stitches because I use Aurifil’s 50wt thread, and the fine weight of the thread withstands stitching over stitches very well.

img_5102

Step 2.  Then I added the holly leaves.  I would do 2 or 3 leaves depending on the space I have.  Sometimes I added the veins in the leaf center, sometimes I didn’t.

img_5103

Step 3.  Swirls are the key to break out of a holly sprig to quilt subsequent holly sprigs.  I just picked a convenient spot to quilt a swirl, and then additional swirls until I end up with an area sufficient to quilt another holly sprig – starting with berries, and then holly leaves.

img_5104

Step 4.  And the process repeats.  Note where it was a bit tight for me to swing a swirl to get out of my holly sprig.  In situations as such, I would just echo the leaf a little and get out before I do a full swirl.  Real life quilting is full of off the cuff improvisations! :)

img_5105

I would keep repeating and repeating and repeating until my entire quilt was covered with the motif.

Thanks for stopping by!  I hope you have a lovely rest of your week!

Needles and Pins in AUSTRALIAN QUILTERS COMPANION (Issue 76)

AQC

Hello Friends!  I hope you are well.  I have SO enjoyed the comments you left on yesterday’s post.  Your Christmas traditions and memories are precious!  I am planning to have a couple more posts where we all can share about our Christmas sentiments before Christmas is actually here.

Today, I am sharing with you my Needles and Pins quilt that is featured in the latest issue (No. 76) of Australian Quilters Companion.  I am in love with the following styled shot of the quilt that is shown in the magazine spread.

_MG_1419

This quilt is for all the nine-patch-ers out there! :) I used the double patch blocks to frame a framed modified nine-patch block.  So, if you like chain-piecing or making nine-patch blocks, I think you will have fun with this project.

AQC_Design 1b_54 x 54

This quilt was made with fabrics from RJR’s Needle and Pins line, designed by my friend Lynette Anderson.

For my US friends, you may purchase or subscribe to the magazine in digital format by clicking here.  I have heard from some of you who subscribe digitally that you have been really happy with your subscription.  THANK YOU for sending me your feedback.

Lynette’s fabrics are always filled with fun little details.  So, in order to fit as many fabrics as I could in the quilt, I finished off the design with a pieced outer border.

IMG_2288

I quilted an allover swirly vine in the quilt center, and finished off with an informal feather in the outer border.  It might be hard to see, but I actually used a really nice soft blue Aurifil Mako 50 thread over Hobbs Tuscany silk batting.

IMG_2265

IMG_2283

I hope you have enjoyed Needles and Pins.  This was a relaxing quilt to make.  I had made it right before Spring Quilt Market earlier this year, after I turned in all the projects for my book Creative New Quilts & Projects from Precuts or Stash.  It’s always thrilling to me to have something featured in Australian Quilters Companion.  I am excited to have a couple more projects scheduled for feature next year in the same publication. The Little House On The Hill: Preview

Hello Friends,  I have been plagued by delayed flights in my recent trips.  I arrived home from Indiana after midnight on Monday. After catching a couple of hours of zzz’s, I went straight to work on a quilt that simply has to catch its flight to Australia. I stayed up most of last night working to make the quilt happen… and here is a very sneaky preview of another collaborative project with Lynette Anderson.

IMG_1939

I have NEVER made yoyo’s this small (without using those nifty Clover yoyo makers) until this project.  It was not as scary as I had feared.  I found that starch-pressing the fabric first helped the process tremendously.

IMG_1943

So tell me – do you like yoyo’s, and do you use them on your quilts?  I will be back tomorrow with a final post on Fall Quilt Market this year to round off our week.  Thank you for stopping by – I hope to catch up with your blogs and emails this weekend.

FREE PATTERN: Devon & DEALS!

Hello Friends, Happy October to you!!!  We have had rain over here for the past few days, and are expecting rain for the rest of the week as well as the weekend.  The chilly weather with the rain makes me want to just stay at home in my PJ’s, and do nothing!  But of course, I am not brave enough to do my school runs in my PJ’s…. yet!  Ha!

I am happy to share with you about Devon, another newly released line by Quilting Treasures.  I had designed the following free-to-use pattern to highlight the Devon fabrics.

Before I go, I have to share with you a couple of deals…

You may click here for more pictures of quilt details.  So back to the following photo — I have gifted the quilt to Lynette earlier this year, and she now has it displayed in her house in Australia.  I am so touched. You may still purchase the exclusive kits, now on sale here.

Over The Fence in AUSTRALIAN QUILTERS COMPANION (Issue 73) & Giveaway!

11218881_10152330736504979_8348672812722872449_n

Hello Friends, I hope you had a blessed Memorial Day weekend.  Ours involved a bit of whirlwind traveling.  We are home now, and are back to our normal schedule.

I have been anticipating my copies of the latest Australian Quilters Companion to reach me from Australia… because I am being profiled in the issue – a small fish like myself!  A huge thank you to the editor for the lovely feature!

It felt sort of weird reading about myself in the profile — because in the core I am a private person and always do my best to not stick out.  I don’t even like to look at my own pictures. But at the same time, I also felt like the feature was an effective way for me to connect with my quilting friends.  So I am torn… In this particular article, you will find out one of my “darkest” skeletons in the closet “sewing-wise”… keyword is zippers!

IMG_0117

Immediately after the profile in the magazine spread is a feature on my joint-venture project with Lynette AndersonOver the Fence.  The complete pattern instructions are included in the magazine.

You may recall the fabrics used in this quilt, Lynette Anderson’s Hearts and Flowers fabrics by RJR Fabrics in my Making Valentines quilt.

Lynette and I used the same fabrics in a different way for the pieced and applique Over the Fence quilt.

The wooden buttons are exclusive to Lynette Anderson, and are available from her store. You may also give Sew Graceful Quilting a call and see if they might carry the buttons if you live in the US.

I had so much fun quilting this quilt, and will let the pictures tell all!

Please allow me to take this opportunity to welcome all the new followers — thank you for following.  For those who are new, I quilt my quilts on a domestic sewing machine made by Bernina (a 640 to be exact).  And I construct and quilt my quilts (exclusively) with Aurifil Mako 50 Cotton threads, and often over Hobbs Tuscany silk batting.

Thank you for suffering through all the pictures, Dear Friends!  I hope you have enjoyed Over The Fence.

Should you wish to preview the magazine in person, Australian Quilters Companion graciously sent me an extra copy to be given as a giveaway prize.  Leave a comment here between now and June 3, 2015 to be entered in the giveaway.  Winner will be announced on June 4. This giveaway is only open to US addresses.

Thank you for stopping by!  I wish you a lovely rest of the week, and shall catch up with you later!

Lynette and I also have a quilt featured in the same magazine issue.  More details will be posted in a separate blog post.  Stay tuned.

I am so excited I have another feature in McCall’s Quilting this year… meet Making Valentines.

Making-Valentines-FLAT-600px

Making Valentines consists of easily constructed heart blocks, colored differently by different fabrics.  When I make Valentines with Miss Baby, I tend to make variations of the same style after making 5 of the same Valentines.   It just makes making Valentine that much more fun.

IMG_0185

Thus, the differently colored heart blocks in Making Valentines.

IMG_9447

I used Lynette Anderson’s Hearts and Flowers fabrics (released by RJR Fabrics) for a slightly different take on the usual Valentine’s Day colors — slightly muted and darker red paired with beige, gray and taupe.  I used white to offset the gray to give the overall design a Scandinavian feel.  Limited number of kits are available here.

IMG_9440

The simplicity of the 9-patch sashing blocks add whimsical touches to the quilt.  Notice my blocks aren’t wonky — that’s because I have a little trick when piecing small squares.  Click here for my little trick to chase away the wonkiness.

I quilted allover Jester’s Hat on the quilt – using Aurifil Mako 50 Cotton over Hobbs Tuscany Silk batting.  You can read about my Jester’s Hat motif herehere, and here.

2014 Recap Part 2: Overseas jaunts

Happy Monday, Friends!  I hope you have had a good weekend!  How is the month of January treating you so far? Right now, I can tell you it is cold where I am.  Very cold for this girl raised in the tropics!

We shall start off the week with another 2014 recap at Ivory Spring.  Last year saw a few overseas jaunts for my quilts and designs, namely in the UK’s Popular Patchwork and Australia’s Quilters Companion.

1.  Mending Fences (UK Popular Patchwork, April 2014)

6.  Pocketful of Daisies Welcome Banner (Australian Quilters Companion, November/December 2014)

In many ways, my overseas features have been very Lynette Anderson-ish except for the Christmas Wreath runner. Lynette is a sweet friend, and an exceptional artist!  I enjoyed working with her tremendously on various projects and features in 2014, including Mending Fences, and Pocketful of Daisies Welcome Banner.  Lynette wrote a sweet blog post about our collaborations and friendship here.

It was wonderful to be able to connect with my overseas quilting friends through publications local to them.  I have a couple of upcoming features already lined up for 2015, but am hopeful I will have a few more.

SO — curious mind wants to know which overseas feature (in today’s post) is your favorite.  DO TELL!

Did you miss 2014 Recap Part 1?  Click here to catch up. :)

Thanks for stopping by.   I have to get back to work!!   I hope this New Year brings you joy and adventures, and here’s to another year of sweet friendship, support and encouragement

Stars Aligned in AUSTRALIAN QUILTERS COMPANION (Issue 68)

Hello Friends!  I hope you have had a great week so far!  Let’s see, Miss Baby and I have done the usuals this week.  We also squeezed in our schedule to see a Reptile Show at our local library, where I learned more about certain crawly creepies than I wanted to know.  Miss Baby was brave enough to pet this large albino snake (gross!).

I am really thrilled about another Australian feature in the midst of all the craziness.  Since I am currently working on things I can’t show you just yet, I am happy to show you something I had worked on months ago. Meet Stars Aligned, my new design featured in the No.68 Australian Quilters Companion issue! You will be able to purchase the magazine on newsstands if you aren’t a subscriber and live in Australia.  If not, you are able to easily purchase the digital version here.

See my name and quilt on the table of contents page?!  I am very excited.  You will also see my friend Lynette Anderson has a project featured in the same issue too!  Yay to Lynette. :)

I do like the layers of stars in Stars Aligned.  Are you able to spot the starry layers?

Design 1h_67.5 x 79.5

Stars Aligned is made with fabrics from Lynette Anderson‘s Starry Night and Bread & Butter, released by RJR Fabrics.  Fabrics are now in stores.

Since the actual sample, made by Jill – a wonderful sample maker, is in Australia, Lynette graciously sent me these pictures from the Down Under.

If you wish to purchase the quilt kits, Lynette has them for sale here.

Lynette also has the kits for Santa’s Sleigh (download pattern instructions here) for pre-order here, our joint design using the same Starry Night fabrics.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read about snake and stars.   I am not nearly as excited about my slightly increased knowledge of snakes as I am about my continuing starry quilting journey!

God bless you all!
