Up to taking Log Cabins one step further?

The log cabin blocks and their sundry variations have long been considered as the most popular quilt blocks. These are the log cabins we are used to seeing:

1.  Blissful in the Clouds

2.  Spring Blooms

3.  Apple of My Eye

4.  Autumn Hues

5.  Pumpkin Patch Table Runner

Now, are you willing to take the application of Log Cabins a bit further… as in this?

So, curious mind wants to know if you would wear a Log Cabin outfit…

Blissful in the Clouds in QUILTER’s WORLD Inspiration for Precuts (Spring 2012)

Have you seen Inspiration for Precuts, the Spring 2012 special interest publication presented by Quilter’s World?

I am excited that my “Blissful in the Clouds” quilt was selected to be in the special issue:

Blissful in the Clouds originally appeared in House of White Birches’ “Log Cabins Today” last year, and now it makes a second appearance in Inspiration for Precuts.

If you look closely, you can actually see how the blues in the quilt background turn darker toward the bottom of the quilt center.

My kites are made of a combination of log cabins! Gotta love those log cabin blocks, eh? ;)

I used a multi-colored rick rack for the tails of the kites.  Miss Baby is really fascinated by the “color-changing” rick rack! :)

Quilting is in line with the theme.  I quilted shapes of clouds in the background.

Inspiration for Precuts has more than 30 featured projects for your quilting pleasure.  You may purchase your copy at newsstands, or online (print or pdf).  Blissful in the Clouds on page 58.

That’s all for now!  Thanks for stopping by.  I hope you have a fantastic weekend!  It might be too cold and wet just yet for us to fly a kite where we live, but I do hope  to take Miss Baby to a kite festival coming up in our area in a few weeks! :)

Autumn Hues in House of White Birches’ LOG CABINS TODAY

I am showing you my second of four quilts featured in the Log Cabins Today book. Red + Yellow + Green + Orange = Autumn Hues is the premise of this quilt.

The use of mostly light-hearted fabrics give the quilt an updated look, especially by introducing polka dots into the mix! For some reason, polka dots are like the life of a “fabric party” – they always lighten up the mood.

Here are a few quilting shots:

The quilting motif on the blocks is actually an applique motif used as a quilting motif. You can read about how I “mark without marking” the quilting motif here.

Fabrics are a mixture of Summer Solstice, Everything but the Kitchen Sink, Crazy for Dots and Stripes, Pindots, Jinny Beyer Palette (all by RJR) and some scraps thrown into the mix. Quilting thread is Aurifil Mako 50 Cotton, and batting is Hobbs Tuscany Silk.

“Log Cabins Today” has a total of 32 projects, and is available from Clotilde in print and electronic versions. Are you tempted yet? :)

Apple of My Eye in House of White Birches’ LOG CABINS TODAY

I was asked to submit designs of log cabin quilts with an “updated” twist for Log Cabins Today, published by House of White Birches.  Little did I know when I hit the send button, four of my designs would be selected.  Thus, a marathon involving getting those four quilts completed ensued sometime in October last year.  However, the trials and tribulations during the marathon are all forgotten now that the projects are reality in the newly published book.  I will be showing  my quilts featured in the book over the next few days… first up, “Apple of My Eye”!

The “apple” in the quilt is a modified log cabin block — see it, see it?

Then I used the Courthouse Steps (probably the best known variation of the Log Cabin block) to line an inner pieced border in alternating orientations for an interesting visual effect!

Quilting was done with Aurifil Mako 50 Cotton threads over Hobbs Tuscany Silk batting.  Fabrics are a mixture from collections Everything but the Kitchen Sink, Crazy for Dots and Stripes, Jinny Beyer Palette, and Pindot — all by RJR.

“Log Cabins Today”  has a total of 32 projects, and is available from Clotilde in print and electronic versions.  I had fun browsing through the other projects in the book.  I found a star quilt that I would like to make for myself… when I get some spare time (hahaha!)

Thanks for stopping by.   Come back tomorrow for another of my Log Cabins Today’s quilts!
