Happy Friday, my Friends! I hope you have had a good week. I have spent much time the last couple of weeks getting patterns packed and shipped to distributors. With all my immediate deadlines fulfilled, I will be using this weekend to catch up on housework! I would much rather be stitching, but…

Chestnut Grove Quilt Along

I have LOVED seeing the different work-in-progress Chestnut Grove quilts on Instagram. One thing that stood out to me is that quilters are using so many different background fabrics for their Chestnut Grove quilts! I am waiting to see one that uses a scrappy background — if you are making the quilt and using a scrappy background, please get in touch with me.

Click HERE in case you miss the first check-in for Chestnut Grove. You can definitely join in the quilt along ANYTIME. There is no sign-up fee, and you are free to sew at your own pace!

Harrisonburg Quilt

This is week #4 of Harrisonburg Quilt Along to benefit the VA Quilt Museum.

Quilt Along Deatils below:

I am happy to share the news that so far $23k has been raised for the museum. THANK YOU for your support. Stay tuned for more exciting stuff that will be happening. If you haven’t watched Pat Sloan on YouTube talking about Harrisonburg quilt, you totally should!

New Pattern Release

This week I shipped off a bunch of printed patterns for Make Gnome Mistake to the distributors. The name gives me a chuckle. You may purchase the pattern in PDF format HERE, or you may check your local quilt shop in a couple of weeks for the printed version.

There is NO paper piecing involved to make the gnomes in this quilt, only conventional piecing is used.

And NEXT WEEK —

I will be announcing a quilt along for my Winging It pattern to start after Easter! I just need to sit down to work on the schedule. Meanwhile, you may purchase the pattern HERE, or if you want to make the quilt EXACTLY like I had design, kits are available HERE.

And that is it for now! I hope to get my de-stash blog post up next week for you as well. My de-stash stash is getting too big!

Have a great weekend!

Hello my friends! TODAY IS THE DAY! It’s our first check-in for Chestnut Grove Quilt Along. I hope you will join me in making my series quilt featured in all issues of Quilters World magazine this year!

THIS IS ANOTHER LOW-STRESS AND LOW DEMAND QUILT ALONG. WE ARE MAKING RELATIVELY SIMPLE BLOCKS AND SEW THEM ALL TOGETHER TO MAKE A VISUALLY INTERESTING QUILT!

DETAILS

1. FORMAT — Check in EVERY FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH

It will be informal check-ins just like last year. This year, it will be the first Friday of each month, starting from March 3 through November. There will be a catch-up month in there! Get your first block done the first Friday of each month, and share your pictures on social media and use hashtag #ChestnutGroveQAL

So we will be following the following schedule to make our blocks!

Chestnut Grove finishes at 64″ x 79″, and consists of 8 different blocks.

Here is Block 1 for our first check-in!

2. PATTERN & KITS

Pattern will be released in 4 installments: Quilters World Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter 2023 issues.

Spring issue is now available – click HERE to purchase issue if you are not a subscriber.

There will be kits offered in a BOM program. Click HERE to join!

My original quilt uses Moda’s Nutmeg fabrics. The magazine spread has a fabric chart that tells you exactly what fabrics are used in the original quilt. Click HERE for Nutmeg fabric information.

The background fabric is a Marionberry Pie Grunge from Moda. Click HERE to purchase the background fabric.

And of course you may choose to make the quilt with Nutmeg fabrics on a cream background.

BLOCK 1 for my Quilt Along Quilts

I somehow enabled myself to make 2 separate quilts with two colorways for the sewalong.

#1. I am using a FQ bundle from Moda’s Rendezvous. This bundle has 40 (!) FQs. So, I will be making this one scrappier than my original design. I love the busy visual interest of a scrappy quilt.

Click HERE for Rendezvous fabric information.

#2. Some quilters requested to see the quilt in Christmas red/green colors. So I was playing around with the design with a red and green palette, and decided that I really like the Christmas version as well.

I am making my Christmas version with a FQ bundle from Riley Blake’s Winter Wonder.

Click HERE for Winter Wonder fabric information.

OTHER COLOR INSPIRATIONS

Here is one with Moda’s Amelia’s Blues. Click HERE for fabric information.

Here is one with Moda’s Clover Blossom Farm. Click HERE for fabric information.

Here is one with Moda’s Sunwashed. Click HERE for fabric information.

Happy Quilting! See you on April 7 for our next check-in! Have a lovely weekend!

Hello Friends, I hope you are all well. How is it we are nearing the end of February already? The last few months have been hectic, but I have been working on a very exciting project for release later this year. It’s quite exciting, and I can’t wait to share with you! Now that THAT particular special project is finished, I am moving toward another special project. It’s something I have never done, but have thought a lot about the last couple of years. I will definitely share with you if something comes off this next project.

HAPPENINGS – QUILT ALONG, STITCH ALONG

#1. Well, the Harrisonburg Quilt Along kicked off with a loud bang! Thank you again for your generous support toward the Virginia Quilt Museum. If you haven’t watched Pat Sloan on YouTube, you need to. She posted several videos of her recent visit to the museum, and got a chance to see the original quilt.

Details are HERE if you have missed it.

This is my Harrisonburg quilt – close to 350 fabrics later! I am going to actually add an additional outer border so that I don’t run the risk of having my binding cut off the points in my diamond-in-square units! I worked TOO HARD on those diamond-in-squares units.

#2. STARTING MARCH 3!! The annual Quilters World series quilt quilt along will be my Chestnut Grove quilt!

Details are HERE in case you missed it.

AND — I mentioned to you I would let you know once I have information about kits! There will be kits offered in a BOM program. Click HERE to join!

#3. STARTING MARCH 1!! And today, I announced on Instagram there will be a needlework stitch along with the H.Purdy Sampler from NeedleworkPress’ Christmas Duo chart. You may purchase your chart from 123stitch.com.

#4. ONGOING — COLOR DANCE SEW ALONG – latest post & details HERE. I am still running behind on this but it is definitely on my March radar screen!

PRETTY FABRICS ALERT

Have you seen Andover’s Strawberries and Cream? Oh my goodness – the reds/pinks/cream in this collection are absolutely gorgeous!

Pattern will be released in my pattern line sometime in May this year. Stay tuned!

BEFORE I GO….

I managed to stitch over the weekend, which was a luxury for me.

Click HERE if you are interested in my INDIGO Thread Collection. I have one box left in my Etsy shop here.

Tell me what project you have been working on! And thank you again for stopping by. I shall catch up with you later! [I actually also cleaned out my sewing room, and have more destashing opportunities coming up! Stay tune.]

Harrisonburg Fundraising Quilt Along starts today!

TODAY IS THE DAY we kick-off Harrisonburg Fundraising Quilt Along! Be sure to watch Pat Sloan’s video today if you haven’t! Pat also did a fantastic video last Saturday on fabric choices & organization for Harrisonburg quilt. Links are in the project page (link below).

A little fun fact for you – Pat and I chose Feb 14 to kick off Harrisonburg Quilt Along for Virginia’s travel slogan “Virginia is for Lovers”. The slogan has been in used since 1969, and a notable marketing icon in the last 50 years, who knew?

Project Page for Harrisonburg Quilt Along – https://www.ilovetomakequilts.com/harrisonburg-quilt-along-to-support-the-virginia-quilt-museum.html

QUILT HISTORY

Below is the photo of the original quilt that is in the collection of the Virginia Museum.

From the director of Virginia Quilt Museum:

Mary Spitzer Etter of Harrisonburg, Virginia donated her family’s entire quilt collection to the Virginia Quilt Museum in 1997. The collection contain 27 quilts, most of which were made by Mary’s aunts, the Spitzer sisters. Their names were Sarah Josephine Spitzer (Walters), Margaret Melinda Spitzer (Jones), and Ellen Rebecca Spitzer. It is unknown if the other two Spitzer sisters, Hannah Spitzer (Brown) and Jane Spitzer (Evers), did much quilting. Of the quilts completed by the Spitzer sisters, there is a single initial embroidered on the front of quilt to mark who made each quilt. Ellen Spitzer’s daughter, Irene, also completed three pieces of the collection. Some of the quilts contain blocks that were done by Mabel Spitzer, Mary’s mother. These blocks were then quilted by either Berta or Effie Long, Mabel’s neighbors. There are a few quilts not made by a Spitzer, yet they were still made by relatives of the Spitzer family.

The blocks of this quilt were pieced in many colors. There is Muslin backing and cotton batting. It is heavily quilted in a cross-hatch design. A lavender “E” is embroidered in the corner.

QUILT ALONG BACK STORY:

A little over a year ago the Virginia Quilt museum shared a photo of the Mary Spitzer Etter quilt at Instagram.  Immediately Wendy Sheppard and Pat Sloan were texting each other that they loved the quilt.. which lead to .. don’t you think it would make a great Quilt along?  Both Wendy and Pat are Virginians.

About a year ago they wrote to the Executive Director of the Virginia Quilt museum, Alicia Thomas, to propose doing a quilt along with the pattern. She said ‘yes’!

Wendy has re-created the pattern from photos of the original quilt and has called it ‘Harrisonburg ‘ for the location of the Virginia Quilt Museum. She is using all her navy and cream scraps for a stunning scrappy version like the original.  Pat is going to sew along during the quilt along using her Benartex fabric, Sleepover.  Both are using their beautiful Aurifil thread collections.

PATTERN:

It is currently an exclusive release only available at the Virginia Quilt Museum. Paper patterns are making their way to the museum as we speak. So if you are wanting to purchase the paper version, give the museum just a few days to post the link to purchase the paper version. If not, pattern in PDF is available NOW by clicking HERE.

ALL PROCEEDS FROM PATTERN SALES FOR THE DURATION OF THE QUILT ALONG AND LIMITED TIME THEREAFTER WILL BENEFIT THE VIRGINIA QUILT MUSEUM

Hello Friends, I hope you have had a good week! I have had a busy week. There just aren’t enough hours in a day to do what I want to accomplish each day! But we do what we can, don’t we?

It’s hard to believe I have been in the quilting world for almost 15 years, as my daughter is now 14. Over the years, I have traveled to teach quite a bit. And I have absolutely loved being able to share face-to-face about my love of needle and thread with quilters! There were some years where I was doing an event for guilds/retreats every 6-8 weeks.

***

However, now that my daughter is getting older, I have severely cut down my travels. For one thing, I feel like I needed to stay home to see my daughter through the next phase of her life, especially during school season.

BUT… I DO HAVE ONE TEACHING APPEARANCE FOR 2023. I AM HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE I WILL BE CO-TEACHING WITH MY GREAT FRIEND KAREN MILLER at a retreat in Hamilton, MO this summer! June 20-23 are the dates! We will have a few days of featuring fun, friendship, and a finish!

But here is the summary:

We will be making a wallhanging START TO FINISH, from tips on accurate piecing to machine quilting to binding during the retreat.

#1. You will see me demonstrate the piecing tips in person I have been sharing with you on this blog to make your feel happier about your pieced blocks.

#2. Karen will be teaching and giving guidance on how to quilt your wallhanging with bonus embellishment techniques!

#3. Binding options.

#4. Trunk shows by Karen and myself.

#5. Personal time with Karen and myself, because we are among friends.

#6. Special events.

Make your reservation today!

Hello Friends, Happy Wednesday to you! I hope you have been well. It’s been wet and cold over here. I have heard from some of you who are experiencing icy weather. I hope you will be very careful when you are out there.

Where we have been…

First of all, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sewing along Norfolk Quilt last year! It was so fun to see the different fabric choices quilters have picked for their own Norfolk quilts. To me, that’s simply the best part of the year-long quilt along! This one is from Celia in Canada.

I completed the quilt top for the quilt along version using a One Fine Day FQ… BUT for the life of me, I cannot find the backing fabric.

My pet-peeve is to have a bunch of unquilted quilt tops laying around. I have a fabric piece that will work for the backing. But you know how that goes — as soon as the quilt is quilted with the substitute backing fabric, the REAL and originally intended backing fabric will show up. What to do, what to do, except to keep on looking?

This #crockpotweekendSAL is sponsored by P&B Fabrics. The fabrics are from their Au Naturel fabric line. I love the pretty small neutral prints. The dandelion prints stole my heart. So far it would look like the charm packs or the kits are sold out, but I did find that Bear Creek Quilting has FQ bundles and yardages HERE.

Besides, this sewalong project, I also designed 2 other quilts. They patterns are also free HERE for you to download and use for personal uses.

Friday 1/27/2023 6:27pm:

My personal chef came through for me! Dinner was enjoyed by all. I opted out of the option of having the meat wrapped in tortillas. So this was my plate.

You may choose to organize/sort your squares by pairs – you would need a total od 36 squares or (18) pairs of 2 squares.

The convention in making a 4″ finished HST unit is that you would cut your starting squares at 4 7/8″. The nice thing about using charm squares to make HST units is that you get that extra 1/8″ because charm squares are 5″. I like to make my HST units LARGER and then trim to size. So, my trick of also ensuring I have more than enough to trim off is that I scooch my squares in such a way that that I am not sewing at exactly 1/4″ from each side of the drawn line. By doing that, I don’t have an exact 1/4″ seam allowance on the HST units, but that’s okay…. because that way, when I cut along the drawn line, and open up the units, I have even more wriggle room for squaring up and trimming. I’d much rather has a HST unit that is a perfect square!

Friday 1/27/2023 12:29pm:

My personal chef (crockpot) assured me he has everything under control, and everything will turn out as it should!

QUICK TIP OR THOUGHT BEFORE GOOD BYE!

To take out stitches, or not to take out stitches? I did, haha. I always take out stitches when I spot a seam that is not quite right, and re-sew! But only take out the stitches and re-sew IF you are bothered by the uneven seam allowance! If you aren’t, just leave the stitches as they are!

Hello Friends, I hope you have had a good week! I want to check in to remind you that our #crockpotweekend SAL is starts NEXT FRIDAY NIGHT!

It’s the beginning of the year, and it’s cold at night, and it’s weekend. And we will be making a super easy quilt using one charm pack and background fabric. This quilt finishes at 33″ square, and it would be perfect to make and save up for a gift for somewhere later this year.

A little birdie told me there will be fabric giveaways for those who complete this quilt within a reasonable time frame. Stay tuned for details!

You may download the free pattern HERE

Of course you may use any fabrics you wish, but I am making mine with these really pretty neutral prints! The neutral theme would be perfect for gift-giving occasion. You may purchase the kits HERE.

HERE’S THE SCHEDULE:

Friday (Jan 27): Evening – we will start making the HST units.

Saturday (Jan 28): We will finish making and trimming HST units, and start to put sew the rows together.

Sunday (Jan 29): Completing quilt top
