Hello, Friends! Today is the day — we are kicking off our Fashionista Sewalong!

SCHEDULE:

We are HERE—>>>Week 1: Cutting (May 26)

Week 2:  Pieced strip section (June 2)

Week 3:  Handle section (June 9)

Week 4:  Catch up & Finishing up blocks (June 16)

Week 5:  Sew blocks together to make quilt center (June 23)

Week 6:  Catch up & finishing up quilt top — end of Sew-Along (June 30) with a special assignment!

— According to the schedule, we cut our fabrics today. So, break out your jelly roll and background fabrics, and start cutting would be our assignment today! Complete pattern, including cutting directions are found in Quilters World Summer 2022 issue. You may purchase the issue HERE.

— Shop for your jelly rolls HERE or HERE. Click HERE if you want to make your own handbag quilt with the same fabrics I used, as shown on the magazine cover.

— Be sure to use #fashionistasewalong when you share pictures of your Fashionista quilt on your social media feed.

— It’s not too late at all you are just now hearing about the sewalong. Just grab the pattern and fabrics, and join in!

Using jelly rolls (or 2.5 strip sets) is a great & affordable way to make a scrappy quilt. Quilters get to play with many different prints included in a 40-ply jelly roll. So they don’t have to spend a fortune buying the various prints to make a scrappy quilt.

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT: We just cut and cut fabrics today, and sort the prints! Here is how I sorted the fabric strips I cut according to the pattern directions.

#1. I pin the bag handle pieces together.

#2. Then I pick (5) G pieces and lay them out. Then I make sure none of them is the same fabric I pick for the handle pieces, and I pin the group and the handle pieces together. That way I have all the pieces I need for a handbag block altogether.

And that’s it for our first assignment, and we will be really ROLLING it next week when we start sewing!

AND HERE’S A FUN “PURSE/HANDBAG” FACT FOR YOU — THE LATE QUEEN MOTHER USED TO CARRIED A MINIATURE FIRST-AID KIT IN HER HANDBAG, A HABIT SHE STARTED DURING WWII AND KEPT THROUGH THE REST OF HER LIFE.

What do you carry in your purse/handbag? I always have an extra pair of contact lens and a little pocket Bible in my purse.

That’s it for Week #1. I am so glad you are sewing along with me. See you on June 2!!
