Hello Friends, I hope you are well! It’s time for my 2 cents AGAIN!
The quilt you see is actually a log-cabin-ish variation that is featured in the March/April 2021 issue of American Quilter magazine. My 2-cents today pertain to sewing narrow pieces like in log cabin blocks. Some would sew the strips onto paper because the paper stabilizes the blocks with narrow strips so that the blocks don’t go wonky. I don’t mind paper/foundation piecing, but I kind of mind having to rip the paper, and paper remnants end up being everywhere. So, for sewing straight and narrow pieces, I actually cut my pieces wider. And then I trim the pieces to size after the pieces are sewn.
For example, the strips are 1″ finished. So, instead of cutting them at 1 1/2″ wide, I cut them at 1 3/4″ – 2″. Then after they are sewn, I trim them to measures 1 1/4″ — because that extra 1/4″ is going to be the seam allowance for the next round of sewing. That way, I also square up my block as I sew.
