Hello Friends! How are you doing in this post-Christmas week? I am back to a rigid work schedule post-Christmas. Let’s see, I have been piecing, designing and pattern-writing since we got back from our Christmas vacation — and enjoying our Christmas still. I am baking cookies again with Miss Baby tomorrow.

I had mentioned that I have another quilt (a star quilt!) featured in the same calendar… and here it is!

This is a scrappy star quilt, made with happy scraps from my stash – mostly leftovers (99.5%) from my magazine feature projects. Looking at this quilt is like looking at all my magazine quilts coming together to be commemorated in one single quilt. So, for me it is a very special quilt.
See these little squares in the block center? They finish at 1″. I used a little trick to chase away the wonkiness (at least most of it) when piecing multiple tiny patches. Click here to read my tutorial.
Quilting was kept minimal. I quilted with Aurifil Mako 50 cotton thread over Hobbs Tuscany silk batting.
One thing worth mentioning is that I was very glad to be able to use a little piece of fabric I had leftover from my VERY FIRST quilt — see that carrots on green patch in the picture above? Yeap, that’s the backing I used for my first quilt.

Yes I do. It was a sampler with one light, one medium, and one dark fabric, along with muslin. I have a little of each from the 1980’s. I hang the quilt from time to time in my sewing room. I made it when you used scissors to cut, cardboard templates, and sandpaper to trace on so the fabric would not shift. Oh those were the days. ; )

I love this! I love the hint, too. I do some piecing without pressing first, finger pressing only, and have realized the pieces are a little better. I also ordered this calendar, because of your designs, and can’t wait to get it! Thanks again, and best wishes for a great New Year!
I also have one of the blocks, and some of the fabrics from my first quilt, from 1989 or so. I have other fabrics I’ve kept for many years.

Those 16 patch star blocks make a wonderful scrap quilt. It must have been fun recalling all of your pieces while working on it. I’m not sure I have fabrics from my first quilt, but I do have some from quilts I made in the early 70s – very dated indeed!!!
I also like to do the star scrap quilt. I love it to! I wish you a good New Year!

Happy and Joyful New Year, Wendy. Your quilts look gorgeous! I do not have any more scraps from my first quilt. I’ve used them all. I do have a quilt that I gave my grandmother-in-law that used some of the scraps from my first quilt. But it was only my 4th quilt. The last piece, from my first quilt, I used was on a niece’s quilt.
I do still have some little pieces of fabric from my first quilt, from 1999. It’s a sampler quilt in Christmas reds and greens.
What a fun scrappy quilt–so happy and cheerful! Thankfully, I don’t have anything left from my first quilt made from blue and red dime store bandanas and a sheet for the back–lesson learned!

Yes, I still have some of those scraps from the table runner class that I took. And…….I still use that table runner from the class that got me started!!

Our post-Christmas week has been more low-key than last week, definitely needed. Until today, when I had to get a tooth pulled. :-/ But I am vegging tonight.

I don’t have any scraps from my 1st quilt, because at that time I didn’t know we were “supposed” to save them and I threw them all away! Gasp! Can you imagine? I assure you, I haven’t done that since, and I now have a respectable stash of 2″ squares, 2 1/2″ squares, 5″ squares, etc that are begging to be used!
Oh my golly, I love your delightful and cheerfully, colorful scrappy star quilt. I don’t think that I have scraps from my first quilting project. Just as well though, because they would be bits of kettle cloth ……..oh dear…… I do have scraps from my first “real” quilt, however. Thanks for your continued inspiration. Looking forward to even more in 2015.
