A day of reflection…

America, the Beautiful by Katherine Lee Bates (1913 version):

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

It’s a solemn, yet a prayerful day here at Ivory Spring on the 13th anniversary of 9-11. My heart is heavy for the untold losses — and yet my heart of hearts cries out with hope to God for healing.

  1. How beautiful and in this day of being politically correct and not living for what you yourself believe in – it’s so nice to know a friend!

  2. I have been thinking about this all day. It is so hard to believe that 13 years have gone by!!! Thank you for this tribute. We must never forget

  3. Thanks, Wendy! One of my sons joined the service on this day 13 yrs ago… and went on to serve 2 combat duties in Iraq. Patriot’s Day is very meaningful to our family. The last picture (with Ms Baby and a colonial dressed fellow) looks like from Williamsburg?
