Joseph’s Pinwheels in Fons & Porter’s LOVE OF QUILTING (May/June 2011)

Happy Monday! I am super happy to share with you another first in my quilting journey. My “Happy Quilt” Joseph’s Pinwheels is featured in the latest Fons & Porter‘s Love of Quilting issue – my first ever feature in that particular F&P magazine.

Incidentally, this quilt will also be featured on Fons & Porter’s TV show coming up in their latest season! This is the quilt I had alluded to months ago when I said I (or rather my quilt) will be on their show… If you are interested to view on your TV, the episode # is 1806, and the episode should be uploaded to all PBS stations by end of July.

The quilt has all these happy cheerful colored fabrics and more from RJR’s Crazy for Dots and Stripes and Cotton Supreme fabric collections! It’s probably obvious, the reason it’s called “Joseph’s Pinwheels” is because of the Biblical account of Joseph and his coat of many colors. I doubt he wore a coat pieced with pinwheel blocks though… ;)

The following pictures are the shots I took after I finished the quilt sample last year. I didn’t take more pictures because I was an air-head. At the time, I didn’t think that it would take me months to receive my quilt back after it’s being published, and thus didn’t take any additional shots to get ready for this post! I have learned my lesson though, and am getting better at taking pictures of my quilt ahead of time for my posts announcing official publish of my projects.

I think my favorite part of the quilt is the black and white sashing units in between the blocks. When I use many colors in a quilt, I like to pull the quilt blocks together as one unit by using either black and/or white.

Kits are available for purchase here if you want to replicate the same level of quilty happiness!

As always, I quilted my quilt free-motion with Aurifil Mako 50 Cotton over Hobbs Tuscany Silk Batting.

That’s all for now. I hope you have a happy happy week!

  1. Wendy, I think that is just so adorable. This may be one of my very favorites of your quilts. Congrats on the magazine coverage. It’s definitely cute as can be with the design and the colors!

    Sheila :-)

  2. Polka dots just bring out the happy smiles, don’t they? BTW, the last to quilt mags I’ve purchased were because of your pretty quilts being featured. I’m a fan!
    hugs, pokey

  3. Hi Wendy.
Congratulations. Lovely to see this gorgeous quilt in the magazine. It is one I subscribe to but will take a week or two to get to me, so I will have to be patient. It is such a cheerful quilt. Looking forward to the magazine arriving.

  4. Your quilt has brightened my morning! Thanks, Wendy. It’s so cheerful. I can envision a sweet baby gurgling and laughing atop this quilt while I tickle her tummy. Fabulous! :)

  5. Congratulations on another wonderful first for you, Wendy! You can, quite rightly, be very proud of your accomplishments. You are SO talented! Not only can you design, but your quilting is awesome…. err, not that we can SEE it here (giggle). But I have no doubt that it is wonderful. Way to go, girl!

  6. I just saw this in the magazine last night! How cool is it that it will be featured in their show?! I also saw the sweet tablerunner in American Patchwork & Quilting the other day. I didn’t look at the designer name at first and said that looks like a Wendy quilt – and sure enough it was!! I’m getting to know your stuff by sight!

  12. Hi, I am also interested in the pattern and instructions for Joseph’s Penwheels Quilt. I absolutely loved the polka-dots. My husband was half watching with me the other day and when the polka-dotted penwheels came on, he said he really liked it. It is so light and happy. I would like to make one for each of my 3 daughter, and my husband too. I don’t know how to get the mag. or patterm?? I am going to subscribe to you mag. and I believe they said you could also download one pattern. Could that pattern be Joseph’s? Thank you for any info on this pattern, Joan AvB
