Flowers Around the Bend: Sneak Peek #2

As I was working on the applique part of my Flowers Around the Bend quilt, I had a revelatory thought.

I was struck by how important the supporting casts are in a quilt.  You will see what I mean.  Flowers without leaves in my applique block are horrifying to the visual sense.

But after the leaves were added, the block went through a major makeover!  Those green little nondescript pieces didn’t seem like much, but they made a huge difference.

This little exercise actually reminded me of an incident from years ago.  I was probably 14 at the time.  It was Chinese New Year, and Mom brought home from the market a huge bunch of fresh glorious flowers.  Before she left for work, she tasked me with arranging the flowers for the living room.  So, I happily worked away – clipping down the stems, and leaves unconsciously.  And in the process of clipping and clipping, I had left those flowers naked.  The floral arrangement turned out to be not so glorious (and that’s an understatement).  I will never forget my Mom’s horrified look when she got home from work that day!  Fortunately, since then, I have done slightly better….

Notice I left a lot of the leaves intact?

Back to the supporting casts… I have come to look at leaves I have to incorporate in my quilts with a renewed sense of respect after my little revelation!  I used to look at them as something I had to get through in order to complete the quilt.  But now, I see them as something essential to the final look of my quilt.  It is now a delight to work with leaves for my quilt.

When in life we take on the appearance of the supporting cast to those we love, just remember that our support to our loved ones is just as essential!  Have a nice day, dear Friends!

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ… Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:12,27)

  1. Hi Wendy,

Thank you for sharing this insight. I’m looking forward to seeing the updates on your progress on this quilt. The colors are so soft and feminine. It’s really pretty.

  2. When I worked as a florist vases were always prepped with leaves first and then the flowers were added. What a difference it has made in your quilt to have the leaves. The quilt is beautiful and so is the centerpiece that you have made. Two jobs well done!!!
